Covid-19 Updated Mission:
This year our Girls Build team was excited to roll out our project for the 2019-2020 Academic Year which involved joining local marches, reaching out to young leaders and creating our student made Know Your Rights children’s booklets to be distributed. We had plans to speak to community leaders and get some one on one time with them to learn how we can continue to develop our toolbox of leadership skills. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances of the world our plans had to change rather quickly. We were in the process of crafting our children’s booklet when we shifted over to Distance Learning and in doing so lost over 50% of our team due to varying circumstances. Now with a team of just 4 girls we decided to modify our project to varying degrees. While before distance learning we had met weekly, we had to change to biweekly Zoom meetings to adjust the to new school schedule and make sure that we were leaving enough time for our school work. Sadly, we had to pivot away from the community outreach portion of our project and decided to focus only on our Know Your Rights booklet. We created a brochure highlighting 9 of the rights that we thought were most relevant to the young people in our community. With the new social distancing protocols we were sadly not able to distribute these booklets as we had previously hoped, so we adjusted out timeline. We made copies of the booklet and plan on distributing them upon our return to school next year. While this project shifted from what we had originally planned, we were proud of our outcome. The new Know Your Rights booklet truly show how we as a team were able to work together during this difficult time and still create something that we are proud of. Additionally, some of our team members were able to participate in the Los Angeles Women's March this past January which was truly an eyeopening experience for us all. To see such a large, unified force all working for a cause that we so strongly believe in was inspiring. You will find a copy of our Know Your Rights booklet below. We hope you enjoy.

Our Process:
From the beginning of our project our team met every Monday to plan and organize our project. Unfortunately, when we switched over to distance learning in March our team had to take some time off to allow for our team to adapt to the new changes with the schedule. In April we were able to begin meeting again over Zoom, using this time to make the necessary changes to our project. In April the LA Promise Fund sent us the update requirements for our project and budget. After thinking it over we decided to use the remainder of our fundraiser money from last year to pay for the printing of the booklets. The entirety of the budget from this year was used according to the LA Promise Fund's new requirements. 40% of the budget would go to our end of the year celebration and providing gift cards and a copy of the Teen Trailblazers book for each of our team members, the remaining 60% would be donated to Girl Powerful. The team at Girl Powerful has come to CPA several times in the past to do workshops with many of the girls and we truly believed that it was the least we could do to repay them for all their help and strength that they have given to our girls. Girl Powerful focuses on providing young teen girls with the skills and tools to help build leadership qualities through social and emotional awareness. In addition to their work at our school in the past we believe that Girl Powerful was an excellent choice for our donation as they focus on key qualities that are necessary in leaders. As our project this year was focused on the rights of individuals and our responsibility to be aware for one another, we felt that this was a good fit.

Project Outcomes and Reflection:
Like many others our project shifted dramatically over the course of this year. Overall, we as a team are very proud of our project outcome. While it was disappointing that we had to take a step back from our original idea of a Know Your Rights children book and we had to limit our community engagement, in turn limiting the number of Know Your Rights books that could be distributed as of right now, we are proud of how strong we as a team came through this project. In the end we printed 50 copies of our Know Your Rights booklets, distributed 20 to immediate members of our team to share with family and friends and plan on distribute, and printing, more copies later in the summer.

Our Original Mission for 2019-20:
As future young leaders of America, we think it is important to be aware of our rights, and our strength and power as members of the United States. Our Girls Build project will focus on the need for an awareness of individual rights and opportunities for engagement and awareness in the community. Our project will have 3 major components;
First we will appeal to local civil rights advocates, policy makers, and young emerging political leaders to come speak in our community and local schools. Our aim is that by welcoming such leaders we are demonstrating to others in our community about the power of individuals the importance of representation in the government.
Our team will also work to publish a know your rights handbook to be distributed at local schools. The final result will be an informative source for young students to know their rights, demonstrating the importance of protecting and well as using your voice to advocate for yourself and those around you.
Finally, our Girls Build group will work to participate in local marches and demonstrations, as well as spread awareness, of such events. As young people we have the responsibility to get involved and begin to make a difference at a young age. We would like to use this opportunity to additionally involve as many individuals in our community as possible.
